Think twice before buying your child a quad, go ped or scooter

Quads, go peds and scooters are not toys and when used irresponsibly can lead to serious injury or even cost someone their life.

This is the message Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon Policing and Community Safety Partnership are delivering to the public, to help raise awareness of the laws surrounding these vehicles – particularly if parents are thinking of buying them for their child.

Did you know, all of these vehicles are restricted to off-road use, so think about where these vehicles can be used before buying one.

It is illegal to use these vehicles on the road – including the pavement – unless you have the following: a driving licence, third party insurance, have the vehicle registered with DVLNI, a number plate, valid tax, obligatory lamps, reflectors, rear markings and devices fitted, and fulfil all requirements under the Motor Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1999.

Permission should also be sought from landowners before using an area.

Additionally, remember it is against Council Byelaws for these vehicles to be used on their property.

“Used irresponsibly, quads and similar vehicles can pose a potential danger to the public and lead to serious injury or loss of life.  It could lead to a criminal record, a possible prison sentence, a fine or penalty points,” commented Alderman Mark Baxter, Chair of the PCSP.

“It is also important to remember that the rider (or parent) is liable for injury to others and a civil claim could be brought against the rider or owner. If you or your child does have one of these vehicles, please ensure suitable safety equipment is worn at all times and the law is adhered to – or you will have to face the consequences.”
