Making new connections, getting active and finding a new hobby are some of the main benefits on offer from the packed programme of Positive Ageing Month events across the ABC Borough, which start on Tuesday 1 October.

Throughout the month of October a wide range of events will be held in Armagh, Portadown, Lurgan, Banbridge, Dromore as well as in our local villages and rural centres.

Whether it’s Tai Chi, Nordic Walking, or some table tennis, there is an activity to suit all abilities and fitness levels. The programme – which is available in the latest ABC Seniors Newsletter, GetActiveABC website and the ABC Council website also includes events which will focus on health checks, protection against accidents and scams, as well as local history and family history talks.

The events for Positive Ageing Month are open to everyone aged 50 and over.

Lord Mayor of ABC Borough and a Council Age Friendly Champion, Cllr Sarah Duffy said the annual Positive Ageing Month campaign was providing a “wealth of opportunities”.

“There is a fantastic programme of events and taster sessions being held in all our local communities and I would encourage as many people as possible to come along and try out something new,” she said.

“Just because you are over 50, doesn’t mean you can’t take up a new hobby or intertest, and during October there is a real wealth of opportunities to have a go at something like Tai Chi or Yoga, or maybe a walking group.

“And the health checks and security events are also a great chance to find helpful advice. And of course there is the opportunity to make new connections which can be so important. I would like to congratulate all those involved in planning and delivering this brilliant programme of events.”

Stephanie Rock, who is the Age Friendly Officer for the ABC Borough said: “As we have had such a great response to Positive Ageing Month in the past few years and I know there will be high demand for spaces at these events this year, I would urge people to book their spaces as early as possible.

“We are all looking forward to seeing more new faces coming forward and getting involved in something new and maybe making new connections.”
