A free, online lecture series about the ‘Rippling effects of the Great Irish Famine’ kicks off in February, chaired by well-known Lurgan historian and author Dr Gerard MacAtasney.
In 1841, the third census of Ireland recorded a population of 8,175,124 – but by 1851, that figure had fallen by over 1.5 million. This decline was mostly a result of The Great Famine, which started in 1845 and devastated the country until the early 1850s. During these years, approximately a million people died and a million more emigrated from Ireland.
This free lecture series will examine the rippling effects of The Great Famine locally, nationally and internationally.
The series begins on Thursday 15th February and runs every Thursday for six weeks. Pre-registration is essential. Click https://www.armaghbanbridgecraigavon.gov.uk/famine/ for more information and to register.
Lectures will be recorded and uploaded to Councils YouTube channel for those unable to attend live.
This project is delivered by Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council’s Good Relations Programme, part-financed by The Executive Office.
