Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough has launched a new environmental campaign entitled ‘Don’t Rubbish Our Future!” which will highlight the impact litter and plastic waste has on our Borough (and the planet) plus showcasing how we can all rethink our use of plastic.
Every piece of plastic we have ever touched is still on earth. It may be intact or disintegrated but it’s still here. Plastic bags, bottles, cigarette filters, cups, wrapping, spoons and stirrers come at a higher price than imagined. Plastic litter is clogging waterways, harming wildlife, ending up in seas and landfills and this is made-up from items primarily discarded as litter.
Our borough has thousands of kilometres of roads, not to mention footpaths, hedgerows, open spaces, rivers and lakes, which are sadly strewn with all sorts of litter – and especially single-use plastics.
Over the next few months, Council will be implementing a number of campaigns to encourage residents to think about littering, single use plastics, recycling and climate change with lots of advice and support – plus encouraging everyone to:
- REUSE: single-use plastics such as shopping bags and disposable coffee cups – bring your own
- REDUCE: the amount of plastics we use
- USE A BIN: Look out for a bin and use it!
- TAKE YOUR LITTER HOME: If you are out and about and can’t find a bin, take your rubbish home and dispose of it responsibly.
Lord Mayor of Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon, Alderman Glenn Barr, comments: “Single-use plastic has invaded our daily lives and is polluting all corners of our planet with dire consequences. We are calling on everyone to do their bit to keep our beautiful Borough clean and tidy while also reducing our use of plastic waste. Your small changes can collectively make a massive difference to our local communities.”
