ABC Council has secured a further three convictions against people who failed to pay an £80 fixed penalty notice for littering after their cases were heard at Newry Magistrates’ Court on Monday 7 March 2022.

An Armagh woman was fined £80 plus £145 costs for an offence committed at McCrums Court, Armagh on 7 June 2021.

In another incident, a Belfast woman who dropped litter in Railway Street, Armagh on 16 June 2021 was ordered to pay an £80 fine and £141 costs.

A Banbridge woman observed committing a litter offence at Downshire Place, Banbridge on 17 June 2021 was also fined £80 plus £141 costs.

Seven further cases, also listed to be heard for the same offence, have been adjourned until April.

In addition to pursuing prosecutions for non-payment of fixed penalty notices, the council is keen to get the message out far and wide that the penalty for littering is £80.

From Monday 14 March, an anti-littering message will be promoted widely on digital advertising screens in several towns across the borough in a number of languages in an effort to make sure everyone understands that they need to dispose of their litter in a bin or risk a fine.
