A new walking trail exploring ten churches across the ecclesiastical capital has been launched in partnership with the Armagh Townscape Heritage Project.
The trail is designed to provide an immersive experience for local people and visitors, offering a glimpse into their history and heritage.
Lord Mayor of Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon, Alderman Margaret Tinsley welcomed the new trail:
“I’m delighted to launch this new walking trail with our local church representatives to recognise and highlight these historic landmarks which are such an important part of Armagh’s architectural heritage.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity for people to experience and explore the ecclesiastical capital, especially over the festive period, which is the perfect time for families to enjoy the walking trail, learn more about the history and built heritage of our churches and hear some fascinating stories along the way.”
The unique architecture is exhibited in the many church buildings around the city. The two cathedrals dominate the skyline and their visual impact will be remembered by anyone who visits the Ecclesiastical Capital.
Some church buildings such as the Palace Chapel and Franciscan Friary are no longer places of worship and one (the Gospel Hall) began life as a secular building before its transformation. Nevertheless, it is evident that they all make a significant contribution to the city’s built heritage and this trail highlighting ten churches is an introduction to their history and architecture.
Stephen McConnell, Chair of Armagh Townscape Heritage Scheme commented:
“A key and important part of the Townscape Heritage project is to engage and educate people on local heritage and highlight the historical importance of their contribution to Armagh’s unique architecture.
“We have a thriving educational programme, and the walking trails play a key part of increasing local knowledge and emphasising the reasons why preserving our heritage is so important.”
The trail is a new addition to the Archbishop Robinson and Architectural Gems Walking Trails which have proved very popular. All walking trails are free and are available as hard or digital copies. Hard copies can be found at visitor attractions including Armagh County Museum, The Market Place Theatre, Navan Centre & Fort and the included church buildings. A digital copy is available to download at www.visitarmagh.com/trails/
