This Christmastime, Lord Mayor Councillor Sarah Duffy is reaching out to everyone across the borough of Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon to wish them and their loved ones a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Reflecting on her time as Lord Mayor and the achievements of our borough, she said:

“One of the privileges of being Lord Mayor is that I get out and about and meet lots of visitors from throughout the borough who are involved in everything from community to voluntary and sporting groups. I can honestly say that this is a great borough and it’s full of great people. And you all have made me, and my twin daughters feel so welcome everywhere we have visited so far.

“I am almost six months into my role as Lord Mayor and what a first six months we have had, from celebrating our Olympian’s success to, of course, the mighty Armagh team bringing home the Sam Maguire Cup. Also, we have celebrated successes on the economic front, with many of our Food Heartland businesses and community groups winning awards as well as the Mid South West Growth Deal getting back on track, which all give me great hope for the future of our borough.

“At the beginning of my term as Lord Mayor, I made a pledge and commitment to raise vital funds and awareness for Women’s Aid Armagh Down. The local charity, which is very close to my heart, is dedicated to ending domestic abuse against women and children.

“At this time of year, while many come together to celebrate, it’s important to recognise that for some the holiday season can bring additional stress and challenges, which is why the need for this charity and their work is so important.

“I encourage you to please check in with your friends, colleagues, neighbours, loved ones and other people you think might be vulnerable during this challenging time. If you think something isn’t right, please act. Get in touch with them – give them a call, send them a text or contact them some other way just to make sure they are okay and know you are there.”

Highlighting that help and support for those experiencing domestic violence is out there, the Lord Mayor added:

“I would urge anyone experiencing domestic violence or feeling unsafe to reach out for help. It is crucial for our community to know that support is available. You are not alone, and help is just a call away.

“If you are looking for help and support, please contact the Domestic and Sexual Violence Helpline on 0808 802 1414 or Women’s Aid NI on 028 3025 0765.

In closing, the Lord Mayor wishes everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year filled with health and happiness,

“I hope that at this special time of the year, you will be able to take some time out and relax. Whether it’s being with friends or family or both, and although Christmas can be bittersweet for those who remember loved ones no longer with us; I sincerely hope this festive season brings you and your loved ones happiness, warmth and hope for the future. Nollaig Shona.”
