An engaging new exhibition by one of Ireland’s most important contemporary artists, Eilis O’Connell, opens at the F.E. McWilliam Gallery and Studio, Banbridge and runs until 30 September 2023.
‘A Family of Things’ explores the development of O’Connell’s practice over almost five decades and features key examples of her work along with previously unseen early sculptures.
The diverse selection of works, which showcase the diversity and innovation that is central to O’Connell’s practice, are on display in the gallery with the larger pieces installed in the sculpture garden.
The collection consists of pieces made from a wide variety of media including steel, stone, bronze, resin, canvas, feathers, bones, and birds’ nests.
Born in Derry/Londonderry in 1953, O’Connell studied in Cork and Boston before spending several decades working in England where she was celebrated for her large-scale sculptures.
Now based back in Ireland, O’Connell continues to produce major public sculptures and studio works that are shaped by her unique vision and capacity to produce forms that are both beautiful and compelling.
A member of Aosdána, the Royal Hibernian Academy and an international fellow of the Royal Society of Sculptors, O’Connell has an extensive exhibition history at home and internationally.
However, her work has not received the public recognition it deserves. Initiated by the F.E. McWilliam Gallery and supported by the Henry Moore Foundation, this exhibition aims to correct that omission and confirm O’Connell’s place in the canon of British and Irish art.
The exhibition is accompanied by an illustrated catalogue with a newly commissioned essay by art historian and curator, Dr Jon Wood.
