Great Famine Lecture

The European Potato Failure was a food crisis caused by potato blight that struck Northern and Western Europe in the mid-1840s. The effect of the crisis on Ireland is incomparable to all other places, causing one million deaths, up to two million refugees, and spurring a century-long population decline. Lurgan Workhouse in 1847 recorded the third highest mortality of any workhouse in Ireland.

This free public online lecture series will examine the rippling effects of The Great Famine locally, nationally and international.

Series will be chaired by Lurgan historian, Dr. Gerard MacAtasney, author of The Dead Buried By The Dying: The Great Famine in Leitrim.
