Local food and drink producers, farmers and agri businesses from the borough of Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon – better known as the Food Heartland of Northern Ireland – shine bright at this year’s Lurgan Show.
Organised by Lurgan & District Horse and Cattle Society, the 107th Lurgan Show saw thousands of visitors descend upon a sun lit Lurgan Park over the weekend [Saturday 4 June] to enjoy everything from equestrian and livestock championships, vintage tractors and machinery to mouth-watering local produce, a pet show and lots of family fun.
Outgoing Lord Mayor of Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon, Alderman Glenn Barr said:
“It was my absolute pleasure, in my final few days as Lord Mayor, to attend the renowned Lurgan Show and meet so many of the borough’s artisan food and drink producers, and champion breeders.
“Bringing together the great and the good of local agriculture as well as showcasing the borough’s unrivalled produce and award-wining livestock, the Lurgan Show highlights just why this region has earned its reputation as the Food Heartland of Northern Ireland.
“As a council, we are extremely proud of these agricultural roots and the sector’s strong economic output, which is why we are so passionate about supporting and driving its sustainable growth and development through our many interventions such as the recently launched Agriculture Strategy and Action Plan.
“Now with the Armagh Show only days away, I would like to wish all those getting ready to take part, exhibit or compete all the very best of luck.”
Supported by Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council, five local agri-food businesses got to showcase and trade their goods including jams, chutney, honey, oils, tray bakes and desserts as part of council’s Food Heartland stand. The show also featured an incredible display from the borough’s champion breeders, handlers and riders; with many picking up trophies, rosettes and other honours.
Dating back to 1846, the Lurgan Show is one of the longest running established one-day shows across the island of Ireland.
The summer show season continues this weekend, with the Armagh County Agricultural Show and Country Festival taking place on Saturday 11 June at Gosford Forest Park. To find out more about the borough’s next local agriculture show click here.
