A retired curator at the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum at Cultra, Mark will take a look at how people dealt with the border, particularly with regard to issues involving transport of people and goods across it.

To close Armagh City, Banbridge & Craigavon Council’s series of historical talks on ‘The Government of Ireland Act and the Birth of Northern Ireland 1918-21,’ historian and broadcaster, Dr Éamon Phoenix will chair a special panel discussion exploring the different peoples & cultures that have made up the population of Northern Ireland over the past 100 years.

Partition and the Creation of Northern Ireland 1910-22

To open our series of engaging Historical Talks on ‘The Government of Ireland Act and the Birth of Northern Ireland 1918-21’, historian and broadcaster, Dr Éamon Phoenix will deliver a special Zoom lecture in conjunction with Ann Donnelly of Northern Ireland Screen on Partition and the Creation of Northern Ireland 1910-22.

This will use historic newsreel footage and State papers to explore the key events and personalities of the decade leading to the opening of the Northern Ireland Parliament in June 1921.

For the third of Armagh City, Banbridge & Craigavon Council’s fascinating series of historical talks on ‘The Government of Ireland Act and the Birth of Northern Ireland 1919-21′ Dr Russell Rees will discuss Edward Carson, James Craig, The Home Rule Crisis and the Creation of Northern Ireland 1912-22’. Dr Russell Rees is a political historian and author. A former Head of History at Omagh Academy, he is the author of ‘Ireland 1905-25’ and ‘The Labour Government and Northern Ireland 1945-51’

Peter Leary will deliver an illustrated talk drawn from the content of his book Unapproved Routes.  Inspired from a dissertation undertaken at Magee College, Leary’s continued interest in the subject has subsequently led him to writing this book as part of his PhD.

Food of the Borough Tour

Our Borough has arguably the most fertile agricultural land in Northern Ireland and is home to a wonderful array of world renowned, award winning food and drink products. Thanks to the lush green pastures and drumlins there is a superb selection of dairy products, beef, pork, poultry bread, compotes, balsamic vinegars, locally pressed oils, pastries etc.

This 6 hour tour, costing £50.00 per person will give visitors the opportunity to come along and savour everything we have to offer. Led by Donna Fox, a highly experienced Tour Guide the coach tour will take in some of our Borough’s most iconic food and drink producers as well as introduce visitors to the less well-known food hero’s across our borough. The tour will include, breakfast, lunch, and lots of samples along the way.

10 am – Meet outside Linen Hill Kitchen and Bar at The Boulevard, Banbridge
10.15am – Breakfast roll in “Quails at the Gallery”, located in the F.E. McWilliam Gallery, Banbridge. Enjoy a quick browse at the current exhibition and comfort break prior to departure.
11.15 am – Depart from F.E. McWilliam Gallery
11.45 am – Arrive Brookvale Farm and take part in a farm tour and enjoy 500ml milkshake of your choice to take away.
1.00 pm – Depart Brookvale Farm
1.15pm – Arrive Harnett’s Oils, Waring Estate, Waringstown. Take part in a tour of the business to include the pressing machine. Enjoy lunch and oil tasting.
2.30pm – Depart Waringstown
2.50 pm – Arrive back at Linen Hill Kitchen and Bar and enjoy a tasting menu comprising a selection of local ciders/apple juice
4.00 pm – Event concludes.

Drums

Drums of Northern Ireland | Navan Centre & Fort | Friday 8th October | 7.30pm  

The sound of the drum is something that is synonymous with the culture from Northern Ireland. Join us at the magical Navan Centre & Fort for hands-on demonstrations on the history, traditions and cultures of different Drums in Northern Ireland.

Learn about and try the Lambeg Drum, Marching Drums, Bodhráns and our other drums. Hear about their international influences and listen to playing from internationally recognised and renowned professional drummers including multi world-champion Mark Wilson, Willie Hill, Carrick Drumming Club, Oisin McCann & Alana Flynn.

For those interested in drums or drumming this will be a night of fun, education and entertainment.
