Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council is urging residents to reduce their food waste to help protect the planet during the first ever Food Waste Action Week 2021 (March 1 to 7).

Wasting food feeds climate change. In the UK, if everyone stopped throwing away the 710,000 tonnes of potatoes wasted every year, it could stop over 330,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions from going into the atmosphere!

That’s why during Food Waste Action Week (1st – 7th March 2021), Council is calling on everyone in the borough to understand the true value of food and consider the impact of their behaviours. When food is thrown away which could have been eaten, it is not just wasting food but the valuable resources that went into making it – water, fuel and land use.

70% of all wasted food in the UK comes from people’s homes – that’s 4.5 million tonnes of tasty food wasted which could have been saved and eaten. Residents can play their part by whipping up tasty leftover recipes, storing food to keep it fresh longer, checking cupboards and making shopping lists to save on the weekly shopping bills.

Lord Mayor of Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon, Councillor Kevin Savage, commented: “We are delighted to be supporting Food Waste Action Week 2021. Wasting food is one of the biggest contributors to climate change. A lot of water, land, energy, time and transportation go into producing our food, and yet we waste millions of tonnes of edible food every year. In addition, wasted food is wasted money and it’s eating into all our budgets. This week is the perfect chance to review how we all shop, cook and eat – helping to save both the planet and our pennies!”
