A weekend of blues magic with over 40 free gigs wraps up successfully for another year

The long-running 7 Hills Blues Fest returned to Armagh City this past weekend, attended by thousands of Blues fans. From Friday, August 2 to Sunday, August 4, the city celebrated the sounds of blues and roots music, featuring over 40 free gigs across 16 venues.

This year’s festival saw an impressive lineup of local and international blues artists and bands, drawing large crowds. Among the highlights were the award-winning Cork-based Two Time Polka, the legendary Rob Strong – celebrating 60 years on the road and known as Ireland’s Godfather of Soul, fan favourites the Pat McManus Band, and the critically acclaimed Ben Reel.

Reflecting on the event, Lord Mayor of Armagh City, Banbridge, and Craigavon Borough Councillor Sarah Duffy expressed her delight:

“We celebrated music and culture with an unforgettable weekend in Armagh for the 7 Hills Blues Fest. The city buzzed with world-class blues, rhythm, and roots music in unbeatable venues, creating a festival atmosphere throughout Armagh. The festival not only showcased our city’s charm but also attracted visitors from near and far, boosting local business and community spirit.”

This year’s festival also introduced fresh talent, including 16-year-old guitar sensation Zac Mac from Lurgan, the dynamic Dublin-based Mr. Castle’s Blues Band, and the high-energy Blues Confidential. Local acts such as Courtnay Giffin, The 4 Shuck Men, and The Dirt also delivered standout performances.

As one of the major annual events organised by Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council, the festival attracted visitors locally and from further afield, enhancing the city’s cultural vibrancy and economic activity.

The weekend was also a family-friendly affair with fantastic entertainment in Market Street. The festival kicked off on Friday with a lively lunchtime performance at the bandstand. Saturday saw the MD Rafferty Music School Live Lounge come to life with free street entertainment, face painting, balloon modelling, and more, ensuring fun for all ages.

The 7 Hills Blues Fest once again proved to be a highlight of Armagh’s cultural calendar, leaving attendees eagerly anticipating next year’s event.
